FAQs about therapy and counseling in Hutto

Starting counseling can feel new and a bit daunting, but I've got you. We'll take this journey together, step by step. You're not alone, and I'm here to help make things clearer for you. I assure you that any questions you have, they’ve been asked before.

Question #1: How do I know if I need counseling?

The fact that you’re thinking this, likely means that counseling would be helpful. You might feel overwhelmed and find that talking to friends, a spouse or family isn’t the most helpful. There might be more complex dynamics in your life that you feel a professional therapist could help you navigate. Often, big life changes prompt people to reach out because they are extremely hard and unknown things in their life.

Question #2: What should I ask a therapist before meeting with them?

Any questions you’re wondering about! It’s good to know what their hours and fees are. If you know you need or want a particular kind of therapist, you can verify if they have that training.

Question #3: How long will therapy last?

This questions varies a lot! I have some clients I have seen for a few years. We work through childhood trauma and how that affects current situations. Sometimes, I only see a parent(s) one time for the consultation and I give them enough direction to where they don’t actually need me. I would say the average amount of time is somewhere between 3-6 months. Building trust takes time.

Question #4: What is the difference between a counselor, therapist, social worker, and psychologist in Hutto, TX?

A counselor and therapist are the same thing. A social worker actually has a degree in social work and their social work license allows them to do counseling/therapy. Psychologists typically have specialized training in evaluations and assessments. Many psychologists do counseling as well. Psychiatrists are the ones who can prescribe medicine for mental health struggles. There are a few psychiatrists who do counseling also.

Question #5: How often will we meet?

Most of my clients come every week. I feel like this is best because it builds momentum and accountability. It’s easy to get distracted during the week and not even reflect on our therapy session. That happens to everyone! We can do more work in a shorter amount of time if we meet weekly. I also have a handful of clients that I see biweekly. A lot of it has to do with scheduling and finances.

Question #6: Do you have experience working with the issues I am looking for help with?

If I don’t, I will give you a referral or point you in the right direction. I want to make sure that I am qualified and experienced in working with your struggles. I am so thankful for the community of mental health workers in this area. We refer to each other and out to others but I feel like we have a great community of helpers with lots of diverse experience.

I hope this helps you find the right therapist in Hutto. If you are still feeling stuck, feel free to call me at (512) 923-00276 for a free 15-minute phone consultation. I’d be happy to hear about what is happening and help direct you to the right person.
